Knee Pain and Cartilage Supplements: 6 Checks on What the Trials Tested

Searches for the best knee supplement mix real evidence with wishful lists. These six checks keep to what trials tested, what they found and what they never touched.

Quick answer

The rheumatology guideline puts exercise and weight management first, and names one supplement. A 2025 comparison of seven supplements in knee osteoarthritis ranked Boswellia first for pain and stiffness, with curcumin showing benefit on some outcomes. No trial of Artivorin's four ingredients has imaged cartilage in people. See a doctor about a hot, swollen or locked joint.

Key facts
  • The 2019 rheumatology guideline's strong advice includes exercise, weight loss where it applies, self-management programmes, tai chi, a cane, bracing and some medicines.
  • A 2025 network meta-analysis covered 39 trials and 4,599 patients and ranked Boswellia first for pain and stiffness.
  • Curcuminoid knee trials used 1,500 mg a day. There are 30 randomised trials of curcuminoids in osteoarthritis.
  • No trial of Artivorin's four ingredients has imaged cartilage in people.
  • Three of Artivorin's four ingredients have no randomised trials in osteoarthritis.
  • Not published: what any cartilage product from an animal source does. The sources do not cover them.

Check 1: What does the guideline put first for sore knees?

Begin with the strongest advice, because it does not come in a bottle. The 2019 American College of Rheumatology and Arthritis Foundation guideline covers hand, hip and knee osteoarthritis.

Its strong recommendations include exercise, weight loss for people with knee or hip osteoarthritis who are overweight, self-management programmes, tai chi, cane use, hand orthoses for the thumb joint, bracing, topical and oral anti-inflammatories, and steroid injections into the knee.

Only one supplement appears anywhere in its recommendations: chondroitin sulphate, conditionally, for hand osteoarthritis. That is the most useful single fact about the whole supplement shelf. It does not mean supplements do nothing. It means none has crossed the bar a guideline sets.

Check 2: Which supplements were compared head to head?

The best recent comparison is a 2025 network meta-analysis in knee osteoarthritis. It covered 39 randomised trials and 4,599 patients, and it compared seven supplements against placebo.

Supplement in the comparisonWhat the analysis reported
BoswelliaRanked highest for pain and stiffness
CurcuminBenefit on some outcomes, and ranked well for function
Krill oilBenefit on some outcomes, and ranked well for function
CollagenBenefit on some outcomes
GingerBenefit on some outcomes
Eggshell membrane and vitamin DIncluded in the comparison

No supplement in the analysis was linked to more adverse events than placebo.

A product built on Boswellia would have a stronger opening argument than one built on turmeric. This site sells a turmeric-led capsule, and says so openly.

Check 3: What did the curcumin knee trials actually use?

Turmeric is the best-studied of Artivorin's four ingredients. There are 30 randomised trials of curcuminoids in osteoarthritis. The 2014 knee trial used 1,500 mg a day of curcuminoids, in three divided doses, over six weeks.

A 367-patient multicentre study set the same daily amount of turmeric extract against ibuprofen at 1,200 mg a day for four weeks. An earlier pilot used 2 g a day of extract against ibuprofen at 800 mg for six weeks. That does not show that a capsule can stand in for a medicine, and nothing here says so.

A 2024 umbrella review of eleven meta-analyses found consistent reports of less pain and better function. A 2025 critical appraisal is frank about how uneven the underlying trials are, and still finds a signal.

Check 4: Does any supplement repair cartilage?

For Artivorin's four ingredients, no trial has shown it. To show cartilage change you would need imaging, such as magnetic resonance, over a year or more. No trial of CoQ10, butcher's broom, alpha lipoic acid or turmeric has done that in people.

The bottle prints a line, SUPPORTS CARTILAGE REPAIR. This site quotes it as the label's wording and does not make the claim. Adopting it would take a handful of words and it would be unsupportable in every one of them.

As for cartilage products from animal sources, the sources behind this site do not cover them. What they do, and whether they work, is not published here, so this post will not guess.

Check 5: How far does the evidence reach?

Trial evidence is about an ingredient at a dose, not a particular capsule. Three limits stand out.

  • The finished Artivorin capsule has not been trialled. Every study cited on this site tested a single ingredient.
  • The label prints no amount, so nobody can say whether one capsule holds a useful part of 1,500 mg of curcuminoids.
  • Three of the four ingredients have zero randomised trials in osteoarthritis. CoQ10 was tested for statin muscle symptoms, butcher's broom in veins and alpha lipoic acid in diabetic nerve damage.

The size of the effect matters too. This site describes the curcumin results as real in statistics and modest in size. In plain terms: stairs get easier, mornings shorten and the joint intrudes less often.

Check 6: When is it time to see a doctor instead?

Some knees need a person, not a product. A joint that is hot, swollen, locked or newly severe may be inflammatory arthritis, infection or an injury. That is a reason for a prompt appointment.

Hand symptoms with a family history also deserve a look. And joint pain that has never been assessed is worth assessing once, before a year of capsules goes into it.

  1. Keep up walking and strength work for the muscles around the knee.
  2. Add one supplement, not four, and write down your three numbers first.
  3. Judge it at eight weeks, and use any guarantee window while it is open.
  4. Tell the prescriber about the supplement if you take an anticoagulant, insulin or a thyroid medicine.

MedlinePlus is the plain-language starting point for osteoarthritis itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best supplement for knee pain?

No single winner is proved. In a 2025 comparison of seven supplements in knee osteoarthritis, Boswellia ranked first for pain and stiffness. The guideline puts exercise and weight management first.

Do cartilage supplements work?

For Artivorin's four ingredients, no trial has shown cartilage repair, because none has imaged cartilage in people. What other cartilage products do is not published in the sources behind this site.

Does Artivorin help knees?

Only its turmeric extract has randomised knee trials, run at 1,500 mg a day of curcuminoids. The capsule's amount is not published, and the finished capsule has never been trialled.

Are knee supplements safe?

In the 2025 comparison, no supplement was linked to more adverse events than placebo. Specific cautions exist, such as curcumin with blood thinners. Ask a doctor about any health question.

How long do knee supplements take to work?

The curcumin knee trials ran four to six weeks before reporting change. The seller's own review data puts the common wait for Artivorin at 3 to 6 weeks.

When should I see a doctor about a knee?

If it is hot, swollen, locked or newly severe, see a doctor soon. That pattern is not what supplements are for.

Our view

Our view: the best-supported help for sore knees is plain and a little dull. Exercise, strength work and weight management come first, and the guideline says so. A supplement is a possible extra, not a plan.

If you add one, pick a single product, check what it prints, write your numbers down and give it eight weeks. Where the evidence stops, this page stops with it.

Safety note. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Artivorin is a dietary supplement. It is not FDA approved, and no supplement is. Ask a doctor about any health question.
